Right…well, aint’ feeling a bit like the pre-Christmas I’ve ever experienced. Trees and shrubs in bloom, the earth paper dry and dusty with daytime temperature at +27C. The only red in the neighbourhood are the bougainvillea blossoms and the roses in pots. The locals insist on wearing jackets and ask me if I’m not feeling cold in my short sleeves with beads of sweat still forming on my forehead at the slightest exertion outdoors in the middle of the day!
Well, it’ll do me a world of good to head NORTH, way up there this coming week…carrying the warmth of the sun with me to the cold, rainy, dark and damp northern Europe. The Xmas lights, the real spruce trees, the live candles and the starry nights (please let me see at least one clear winter night sky) will feel like home and maybe, just maybe make me feel a bit more like it’s Christmas.
Hyderabadians…well, they wouldn’t recognize my endearing term…are all ready for the season with colourful trees in hotel lobbies (put together of empty plastic water bottles, I’ll have you know), tinsel and decorative balls in shop windows and oh yes, Santa suits in plastic for sale…No, can’t avoid the glam and glitter of Yule time shopping here, either. Just happy that here I can afford to buy Kashmir silk pashminas or bangles and other decorative items without sweating for the next 6 months to pay off the credit card bills.
December in India is what June is in North America –the wedding month of the year! Happy to have been invited to one Reception already. And not just any old wedding reception but one where a local Bollywood big name star showed up….Wasn’t introduced to him but learned a lot about how much Indians love their film celebrities. Can’t wait to learn to do some of that dancing….it really does look like a bundle of fun and great exercise.
My dearest, do have a wonderful holiday season wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. It’s the time of the year to slow down, curl up with a great book, eat, oh yes, smile and be happy.
Most wonderful holiday greetings to ya all.
